Standardized Patients

WOW. What an experience. We were told last week that we had to interact with a Standardized Patient based on a video we had watched in class about a patient falling while trying to get onto a wheelchair. Sounded easy enough. I prepared my questions and walked into the OSCE suites (aka rooms that look exactly like your doctor's office but with a two-way mirror for people to observe you) at school and took my seat with my group.

Our invigilator walked in and told us that she was going to start the camera and to refrain from saying anything private since the rest of our class would be able to see and hear us, which is nerve-wracking in itself. Our chit chat immediately ceases after that and we're forced to wait for the prompts that come through the speakers.

After about 10 minutes of uncomfortable silence, the overhead announcer lets us know that our patient is about to enter the room, and sure enough, he does. He's an elderly patient and struggles to get to his seat because he almost trips over MY bag. I'm extremely nervous at this point and it just gets worse since he refuses to answer all our questions and instead just says the whole situation is his fault. At this point, my group is getting stressed and just rapidly firing questions at the poor guy. I'm trying to get any question out since my two group members are extremely chatty, but was not successful. You could feel the tension in the room mounting.

The announcer says that it's time for the patient to give us feedback and immediately everyone's shoulders fall and we all laugh and greet the actor by his real name. He didn't attack us like the other groups (we were the first group to go and they probably didn't want to traumatize the other students that early in the day). He critiqued us all and mentioned that I barely got anything to say, which I'm sure will be a hot topic in the following weeks to come when my classmates get to watch the video again and give me feedback.

I'm just glad it's over and that we weren't the unfortunate group that got the aggressive actors who got all sarcastic and catty.

Just needed to get this out. Ugh

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

My first year at Michener is unofficially over! No more classes or presentations! Just finals. Nothing I can't handle.

I was in a sour mood all week. Attacked a couple people, picked fights that are still unresolved (blah). Saturday was spent eating a lot of expensive Japanese food that ended up in the toilet after many expensive drinks followed by me passing out at the bar. It's good to know that at 23 I can still throw tantrums like a child, except these cost me a lot of money.

Monday, March 28, 2011

It's the first day of Week 12. Time has flown by! Two more weeks before exams, 4 weeks from clinical, and 5 weeks before I inject my first real patient.

In terms of schoolwork, I only have 1 major group project, 3 practicals, and a reflective paper left before finals.

Venipuncture practical in 3 hours. SO NERVOUS.

REMEMBER TO TALK TO THE ARM AS IF IT'S A REAL PERSON.

025

After making fun of everyone for being sick, I now feel completely miserable. No cough/throat medicine, throat lozenges, or tea in the house and -30˚ weather outside. I feel like poo. :(

003

Winter Semester started today. We only had labs, so the big reunion will be tomorrow. I'm in the same lab group with Kyle, Craig, and Dave, so I know it's going to be fun. Also, Brian approached me while I was doing wipe tests in the hot lab and told me I won the scholarship for his class! It's not much, but all I've been doing since then is thinking of things to buy!

002

I went shopping at the Eaton Centre with Mel at 2 pm and met up with Sundus, Ryan, and Kyle for drinks at Toby's at 6 pm. $10 pitchers! Buzzed by 8 pm and had a delightful walk home feeling warm from the beer.

Photographed above are my purchases for the day: carrot sticks, iceberg garden salad, and my share of our pitcher of Canadian. I bought the vegetables because I have a full bottle of Caesar dressing that expires in 10 days and because I was too cheap to buy a plastic bag, I had to carry my purchases into the bar like that. I also bought a padlock for the locker I'm going to steal tomorrow. My current one is filled with two bottles of vodka and a few cans of energy drinks I got for free at Dundas Square and can no longer hold my backpack and jacket. I go to school to learn AND party.

2010: REVOLUTIONS
  • figure out what I want to do with my life √

  • take photographs √
  • no unnecessary purchases
  • take chances √
Last year was full of milestones: I graduated, got my full license, paid off all my debt, and was in the running (final two choices!) for a job with the government. When that didn't work out, things started to fall apart. I couldn't find a real job and ended up working at a green house as a cashier with a degree under my belt. I randomly heard about Michener, applied last minute, and got in! I once again packed all my things and moved downtown right next to Hobo Alley. I've met the most wonderful people at school and they pretty much saved my year.

Last night was spent at Andrew's condo and Molly Bloom's and Fran's (we started and ended the night eating breakfast food). Had brunch this morning with Mel and Eiko at the Village Idiot Pub and ended up sitting RIGHT next to a famous model. She commented on my food and told us about her next photo shoot in India! Here's hoping 2011 will continue to be awesome!

Semester in Review

Going back to school was probably one of the best decisions of my life. I don't know if it's because of the people I've met the past four months or because it's postponing entering the real world. Either way, life is really good right now.

The semester started off with the boat cruise. I was seasick the whole night, but it was still a lot of fun.

Even though we all have the same classes, our program is divided into 5 different lab groups. We didn't have a chance to get to know each other until that night.

This is the gamma camera. Probably the most expensive camera I will ever get my hands on. This is also the basis of my program and what I will be using for the rest of my life if I choose to stick with this career. I'm all smiles in these pictures, but to be honest, I hate using that dual head camera. We have older models that are far less complicated and I prefer to use those machines. I'm old school like that. During labs, we all fight to play with the wheelchair and walker. Our professors also head to the wheelchair the second they enter the room. Also note the dummies that we have to work with. They wear socks and shoes too and scare the shit out of me.

Working in the hot lab used to scare me, but I've gotten used to having the radioactive symbol being on everything. I've only gotten contaminated once and it was only on my lab coat. Classmates have gotten their skin contaminated and were forced to wear gloves for 6 hours (!!!).

This is Brian. Our Radiopharmacy prof. Probably my favourite instructor of the semester. He was our toughest professor and very intimidating, but I know he just wants us to succeed. His class was every Thursday and Friday at 3 to 5. He knows how tired we are at the end of the week, so he would bring us food every class to help keep us awake. Note the wrappers on my desk. We decided to repay him by making a Brian cookie.

Our next big class outing was this one. This night started our weekly tradition. We'd all meet in the lobby after Radiopharm and walk to some restaurant for dinner, pre-drink in Schatz hall, and then end up at a bar. This happened pretty much every week until the end of the semester! During this particular night, we ended up at the Madison for dinner, pool, and darts, and then migrated over to the Fox and the Fiddle for some karaoke.

You guys have probably heard me talk about Melanie. She's pretty much my soulmate. We instantly hit it off. We both have odd last names, are very white-washed, have VERY similar backgrounds in terms of schooling, family, and friends. We get the EXACT same marks in every class and even own the same cell phone. Our classmates still get us mixed up sometimes. This was one of our many impromptu dates at the park.

Dinner at Casey's followed by drunkenness at Bar 244 (our favourite hangout). Cheap drinks and a dancefloor is all we need.

Mel's birthday happened around this time too. Stone's Place is where we ended up. Reminded me of a much larger Doogie's and the HBF MUST hit this place (no photos because I was really sloppy that night).

We had a pumpkin carving contest at school. My group won second place. Well, THEY won second place. I didn't touch the pumpkin at all. I just put my origami skills into making the hat, the beard, and Zero.

Halloween. Nuc med got VERY sloppy. Free drinks from the school and $1 pizza slices. We ended up at Bar 244 again that night.

Henry, Rosa, and Anna's convocation. Kelvin picked us up and I got to ride shotgun in his Mini Cooper! We met up for some photos and then Eiko took me on a tour of UC photographed above. Reminds me of Hogwarts!

Then we went for wings. We demolished 8 pounds of wings plus sweet potato fries and salad between the 5 of us. Gross, I know.

My birthday at the Old Sphaghetti Factory. My WHOLE program showed up minus 5 people. It was a wonderful evening. Spumoni!

Games night 1 and 2 also happened around this time each ending up at Bar 244.

The week after was Alisha's birthday at the Crooked Cue. It was at a pool hall in Mississauga and I got to meet the brown version of Tiago.

The weekend after was Anny's birthday at a karaoke bar. They served us unlimited amounts of Soho with tea! I spent the night at Calvin's HUGE house and he drove us back in his Lexus. (I'm not jealous at all...)

The Asian Scale.

This takes us to the last weekend of the semester before exams.

Brian hosted a potluck for us and set up karaoke. That cake up photographed above is a cheesecake ice cream cake. It will bring you to tears. Mel and I ate about half of it and then serenaded our class with Careless Whisper.

Apparently the end of classes means that we can run along the window ledge and get drunk playing Monopoly in Schatz Hall. We ended up at Bar 244 once again.

After exams, we exchanged our presents for Secret Santa, ate at Fran's, and then partied one last time in Schatz Hall with the Rad techs. If that's not Interprofessional Collaboration, I don't know what is!

Food baby is really evident in the last photo. This is what I get for eating out once or twice a week for a whole semester.

Class photo.

I love that we're all super close and get along really well. Since the semester has ended, I've seen Black Swan with Mel, skated at Nathan Phillips Square, partied at some lounge 5 minutes from my place, and had several meals with the usual gang. We can't get enough of each other apparently.

I'm also going to start up another Project 365 for 2011. It's far easier updating that way.

Bonus:

My new boots. My average is over 90% (!!!) for the very first time in my life, so I decided to buy these for myself.

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Just got back from a hungover/goodbye breakfast with my nuc meds. I'm going to miss them the next two weeks! We also walked into Amir Johnson on the way to Fran's and said hi.

Thursday, December 2, 2010

I can't believe tomorrow's the last day of the semester. I'll be ending the semester with my final practical at noon, napping in Schatz hall one last time, running to Dairy Queen to buy the most divine cake I have ever eaten for my class potluck, singing my heart out for karaoke with my prof, and finally having one last drunken night with my Nuc Med peeps one last time before we all part ways for the holidays.

I absolutely LOVE the people in my program.

262.

I don't want to study for my anatomy quiz, so I'm going to be productive on this blog instead. Too many things to write about, so I'll just post pictures from Friday night's boat cruise.

This is about a third of my classmates. I am clutching a rock hard bun that I nibbled (more like GNAWED) on the whole night to keep myself from puking.

The view from the boat was nice though.

247. LIFE

You can't tell from my face but I was extremely excited to get a free shirt! The past few days have been extremely overwhelming.

Tuesday:
- moved downtown
- ramen with the little brother
- unpacked all day, which is a daunting task when your bedroom is a tiny box

Wednesday:
- orientation with all the new students
- ice breakers with my program
- BBQ
- mentalist show
- second city

Thursday:
- tour of U of T campus which is GORGEOUS (sorry Guelph!)
- orientation with MRS
- scavenger hunt all around Toronto (second place because we couldn't find the moose in Kensington Market!)
- pho with Linda

Friday:
- meet and greet with upper years
- played pool and watched cash cab with new friends :)
- steam whistle brewery tour
- ran to the train station to go home completely forgetting to pack clothes

Saturday:
- last shift at Humber which consisted of lots of hugs (it was a little sad saying goodbye to people I have seen pretty much everyday for the past 4 months)
- Gina's birthday party

Sunday aka today:
- driving around Brampton searching to find someone to give me my final Hep B shot
- grocery shopping because I can't live off of restaurant food every night as much as I would love to (living in China Town is going to get me fat)
- going back to the IKEA BOX to get things organized for school on Tuesday and possibly going to the ex on Monday with classmates

Bonus:
That's pretty much my whole bedroom. To my right is my bed and immediately in front of me is computer desk and another set of drawers. Welcome to the IKEA BOX.

238.

I can't wait to...:
1) end my career as a cashier.
2) go to school downtown.
3) meet my future classmates.
4) spend my days in cold lecture halls instead of hot sweaty greenhouses.
5) OWN A LEGIT PAIR OF SCRUBS.

Sometimes, I get so excited that I can't sleep at night. And then I remember that I have 6 courses next semester, 8 am classes, and an exorbitant amount of debt to worry about. Oh, life. You are indeed a roller coaster.

My insect bites are a nice aubergine colour now. Still swollen, burning, and throbbing.

202.

I worked a half day today (1:30 to 7) and there were barely any customers. I pretty much sat at my till and picked at my bandages all afternoon. Finally pulled the steri strips completely off when I got home.

I can't imagine what my back looks like right now. Blecch.

Crocheted cactus or penis sweater?

194.

I paid off all of my undergraduate debt the other night and I'm making sure I take full advantage of this short period of guilt-free spending. Vaughan Mills shopping has left my wallet $45.52 lighter and my closet 5 pairs of socks, 3 plastic headbands, 2 basic tees, 1 lace wife beater, and 1 tulip skirt heavier.

Monday, July 12, 2010

193.

Today, I received my first wedding invitation that didn't come from someone in my extended family. When did I get to this age where I have to start worrying about "plus ones" and marriage?!

In other news, I had "Mysterious Bump" excised. It was disgusting seeing a marble-sized bulge where they injected the anesthesia and equally gross watching the doctor hack away at my skin with her scalpel and tugging at the neon blue stitches. However, only three weeks until I find out what it really was, two weeks until I get my stitches out, one week until I can shower regularly, and 48 hours until I can remove my bandages.

A TINY Photo Dump

We had a 50% off sale at work on all tropicals, vegetables, herbs, and annuals. I couldn't help but take this one home to join my lucky bamboo and zebra cactus. I plan on adding a paper crane or monkey inside the knot because I'm cool like that. Once the perennials go on sale, I'm buying a silver mound artemisia. It's softer than cat fur!

And speaking of cats, here's Preggers taking a nap on my printer.

Today, I plan to:

1. Change my bedsheets.
2. Reorganize my closet and drawers.
3. Vacuum and dust my room.
4. Book my First Aid courses.
5. Trim my bangs.
6. Veet my legs.
7. Pluck my eyebrows.
8. Come home in pain after Korean BBQ.

1. Didn't get the job because of a hiring freeze :(

2. Going to school instead :)

3. New hoodie just in time for Canada Day :)

Yay for kids' sizes being cheaper!

Monday, May 31, 2010

I passed my G test, bitches!

Hoping that the good news will keep coming. Potential future job was supposed to email me today regarding their hiring decision and sure enough an email was waiting for me when I got back to the library. After sitting for a solid 2 minutes just trying to get myself to open and reading the damn email, it turns out that they've delayed making a decision to the end of this week. MORE WAITING. Arrgh!

146. The things I hear at work.

The only form of communication at work between the employees is through walkie talkies, so I get to hear really ridiculous conversations and announcements. These are just from today:

"To all the male employees using the bathroom in the inside store: The magazines are to be kept on the magazine racks in the lunchroom. I repeat: Magazines stay inside the lunchroom."

"Charlie the squirrel is back. Can someone help lead him outside?"

"Can all the employees please keep their eye out for a lost BLACK girl? She was last seen hitting the pop machines."

Aside from laughing my ass off at the stupidity that surrounds me, I also get the opportunity to come across the foulest of body odors my nose my has ever encountered and perfect my Indian accent. My life is awesome right now.

132. Quick Update

1) I'm a full-fledged cashier now. In other words, they took away my "IN TRAINING" name tag, I'm responsible for everything I do now, and customers have less patience when I ring them through. Yay.

2) I spent $5 of my first pay check on a golden apple snail that just died today and a blue mystery snail that is slowly eating previously purchased snail. Another $5 went to paying Aaron to do my chores because I am that lazy.

3) I was placed on the coldest till on Monday and as promised, everyone got a senior's discount PLUS one free item. I'm 100% sure I will be the first one let go at the end of May.

4) I GOT INTO MICHENER. Fuck, yes! A snippet from the one-paged acceptance letter in the tiniest envelope (sneaky bastards!!!): "Congratulations! We are delighted to offer you admission to the joint Bachelor of Science and Diploma Program in Medical Radiation Sciences of the University of Toronto and the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in the discipline of Nuclear Medicine for the 2010 - 2011 Session." Well I'm delighted too. :)

I just need to get through one more interview and my driving test and I can check off everything on my Stress List!

My work uniform consumes me. And yes, that is my name embroidered on the sweater.

Medieval Times. Our knight didn't win, but he definitely put up a fight and gave us some good laughs for 1. looking so awkward and 2. resembling Skip. Our squire was super speedy too! Overall, a good and definitely tasty experience.

M: I can't wait to see the comments on the Internet tomorrow over how ridiculously bad this is.
R: What?! Why they would they make fun of this? This is awesome.
M: Their shoes are on fire.
R: Okay. Now you can make fun it.

Worst Olympic opening ceremony EVER.

042. I fold.

(A unicorn, Yoda, Totoro, baby elephants, a pig, a panda, and a tessellation.)

Expect a folded piece of paper for every occasion that requires a gift. I'm not kidding. I will be broke for a very long time, if all goes according to plan. And just in case you're wondering, the clothespins are keeping the figures standing.

Note: The unicorn isn't real origami. It needed more than one piece of paper and required the use of scissors. IMPOSTOR!

036. Blizzard club.

Picked up my transcripts from Aquinas. I was completely amazed at Mr. Ungaro's inability to age and pleased at being able to walk away without paying, so I spent my money on a Blizzard instead. Best decision of the day.

035. Volume.

Contrary to popular belief, I only average around 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. I usually sleep at an indecent hour and rise at equally indecent time. However, tonight, I went to bed relatively early, but woke up way past noon.

Results: Feeling and looking kind of crazy. I'm kind of digging the volume though.

In other news, my mom owns a pair of oxford ankle booties. She's so lookbook.

034. More application stress.

I received a package today that included a Choice Form and instructions on how to fill out a Personal Profile. Takes me back to high school and filling out all those supplementary forms for the universities I applied to.

I've already decided that my first choice is Nuclear Medicine followed by Radiation Therapy and Radiological Technology. Easy. The Personal Profile, on the other hand, is an essay that tells them about who I am and what I would bring to the profession. Not so easy.

They have video testimonials online and the woman for Nuclear Medicine happens to be Filipino and shares my exact history. JUST ACCEPT ME ALREADY!

021. Someone buy me 'Origami Essence' by Ramon Diaz, PLEASE.

*NOT MY PHOTOGRAPH*

But it could be if I get my hands on that book. I just spent $215 on ONE school application. Expect A LOT of origami pictures in the future, since I need a way to keep my application stress at bay.
